Geocaching.

Treasure hunt with a story.

Geocaching - what is it actually?
Geocaching can be defined as a contemporary treasure hunt. Caches (=stashes) are placed in many different places (at times also very unusual) with the aim being that these caches are then found by someone else. Each cache looks different and has its own geo-coordinates that are stored on a global platform, so they are visible to geocachers. As a result, these caches can only be found using a GPS device or with the relevant app on a Smartphone. For a geocacher the biggest joy is having found a cache and putting their name in the log book to confirm their find.

Since summer 2015 there have been three new geocaching tours in the Tannbergg area of Warth, Schröcken and Lech. The routes are related to theme and dedicated to the areas of sport, nature and culture. For instance, geocachers can follow the "Pastor Müller and the white gold circuit" in the footsteps of the clergyman who brought the sport of skiing to the region in 1894. During the "Walser village & natural gems" tour, geocachers get to trace the Walsers and their history and on the tour "Where are the Gips" get to find out more about the unique ‘Gipslöcher’ conservation area, where there is over 1000 sinkholes.

Huge fun, not just for ambitious geocachers, but for all the family too!

How it works's.

Geocaching is quite simple - here are initial steps so you can get going straight away.

  • 1 Register free at www.geocaching.com - this site provides all the information you need about geocaching and caches in the surrounding area.
  • 2 You need a GPS device or a geocaching app on your Smartphone to be able to locate caches (App download for iPhone and Android).
  • 3 For tours in Warth, Schröcken and Lech you can get a treasure map and stamp passes in the respective tourist office, and these need to be punched at certain caches.
  • 4 Store caches for offline availability so as not to be reliant upon Internet connection.
  • 5 Before every search read what is termed the ‘listing’ for the specific cache, go through the cache details. Often there is a puzzle to be solved before you actually go and search for the cache to then progress.
  • 6 If you are looking for a cache and then find it, please act "inconspicuously", so other hikers don’t either think that you have lost something, or that there is something to find here (otherwise things get boring).
  • 7 When you have found a cache, please enter your name and the date in the log book. If you find objects in the cache you can only take something if you will be adding something of a similar or a greater value.
  • 8 Please place/hide the cache again, at the exact position in which you found it!
  • 9 When you find caches that contain a stamper, please stamp the relevant field on your stamp book.
  • 10 When you have found all the caches and stamped out all the motifs in your book, upon presentation of the complete stamp book you will receive the popular "Tannberg Geocoin" in the local tourist office by way of a reward for all your efforts.

Stamp books can be downloaded in advance here.
